Marie L. Williams was born on August 4, 1926, in Vicksburg, Mississippi, one of sixteen children of
Jake and Charity Billinger. She accepted Christ at an early age, and for the rest of her life she
stood firmly on the Word of God.
Even as a young woman, Marie had a quiet confidence about her. It gave her the courage to leave her
parents’ home and face the world on her own terms. On February 28, 1945, in Vicksburg, she
married the love of her life, Samuel Williams Sr.
In the 1950s, Marie and Samuel moved north to Chicago. Through hard work and determination they bought
a home, and there they raised their four children: Samuel, Yvonne, Daniel, and Rosemary.
Marie worked for Solo Cup Company, Samsonite Luggage, and Burlington Northern Rail before retiring
from Amtrak. There she earned the respect of management, and she used it to open doors of employment
for many family members and friends. Her legacy of opportunity touched many lives.
